The Objective
The goal of checkers is to capture all of your opponent's pieces or block them so they cannot make any legal moves. The game is played on an 8x8 board with 64 squares, but only the 32 dark squares are used. Each player starts with 12 pieces placed on the dark squares of their first three rows.
Basic Movement Rules
Regular Pieces
Regular pieces can only move diagonally forward, one square at a time, onto empty dark squares. They cannot move backward or sideways.
King Pieces
When a piece reaches the opponent's back row, it becomes a King (marked with "K"). Kings can move diagonally both forward AND backward, making them much more powerful.
Capturing
To capture an opponent's piece, jump over it diagonally to an empty square beyond. The captured piece is removed from the board. Multiple captures in one turn are possible.
Mandatory Captures
If you can make a capture, you MUST make it - captures are mandatory in checkers. If multiple captures are available, you may choose which one to take.
Special Rules
Double/Multiple Jumps
If after capturing a piece your piece lands in a position where another capture is possible, you must continue jumping until no more captures are available in that sequence.
Promotion to King
A piece is promoted to King immediately upon reaching the opponent's back row. The turn ends when promotion occurs, even if additional captures were possible.
Draw Conditions
A game is a draw if neither player can force a win, the same position repeats three times, or 40 moves pass without a capture or promotion (tournament rules).
Checkers Tips and Strategies to Win
Control the Center
Pieces in the center of the board have more mobility and control more squares. Move your pieces toward the center early to establish a strong position and limit your opponent's options.
Protect Your Back Row
Keep at least one piece on your back row for as long as possible. This prevents your opponent from getting Kings easily, which is crucial since Kings are much more powerful than regular pieces.
Keep Pieces Together
Move your pieces as a group in a pyramid or wedge formation. Pieces that support each other are harder to capture and can set up powerful multi-jump sequences against isolated opponent pieces.
Use Forced Captures
Since captures are mandatory, you can force your opponent into bad positions. Set up situations where they must capture, leaving their pieces vulnerable to counter-attacks or multi-jump sequences.
Trade Up When Ahead
If you have more pieces, trade equally (one for one) to maintain your advantage. With fewer pieces on the board, your numerical superiority becomes more significant and easier to convert to a win.
Plan Your King Route
Before moving a piece toward promotion, plan the safest path to the back row. Avoid routes where your piece can be easily captured. A King is worth the patience of a careful approach.
