About Defender

Defender is a revolutionary 1981 arcade game by Williams Electronics, designed by Eugene Jarvis. It pioneered the side-scrolling shooter genre with its expansive wrapping world, minimap radar, and complex controls that rewarded skilled players.

The game is famous for its brutal difficulty and innovative design. You defend humans from alien Landers that abduct them - if a Lander reaches the top of the screen with a human, both transform into deadly Mutants that aggressively hunt you.

How to Play Defender

Master Movement

Your ship has momentum - it takes time to accelerate and decelerate. Use all four directions to navigate the wrapping world.

Protect the Humans

Watch the minimap for Landers grabbing humans. Shoot the Lander before it reaches the top, then catch the falling human!

Return Rescued Humans

After catching a falling human, fly them back to the ground for bonus points. Gently descend to drop them off safely.

Clear Each Wave

Destroy all enemies to advance. Watch out for Mutants (red) - they're fast and aggressive!
