About Gin Rummy

Gin Rummy is a classic two-player card game that has been popular since the early 1900s. It's known for its perfect blend of strategy and luck, making every hand exciting and unpredictable.

The goal is to form melds (sets of matching cards or runs of consecutive cards in the same suit) and reduce your "deadwood" (unmatched cards) to knock or achieve gin for bonus points.

This browser version lets you play against an AI opponent anytime. Perfect for practicing your skills or enjoying a quick game during a break!

How to Play Gin Rummy

1

Draw a Card

On your turn, draw either from the stock pile (face-down) or the discard pile (face-up).

2

Form Melds

Create sets (3-4 cards of same rank) or runs (3+ consecutive cards of same suit).

3

Discard

End your turn by discarding one card to the discard pile.

4

Knock or Gin

When your deadwood is 10 or less, you can knock. With 0 deadwood, you gin for bonus points!

The goal is to form melds (sets of 3+ same rank or runs of 3+ consecutive cards in the same suit) and reduce your deadwood (unmatched cards) to knock or gin.
Knocking ends the hand when your deadwood totals 10 points or less. If your opponent has less deadwood after laying off cards, they 'undercut' you and score bonus points.
Gin is when you form melds with all 10 cards (zero deadwood). You get a 25-point bonus and your opponent cannot lay off cards on your melds.
Absolutely! Gin Rummy is fully optimized for mobile devices, tablets, and desktop computers.
Face cards (J, Q, K) = 10 points, Aces = 1 point, number cards = face value. The winner scores the difference in deadwood plus any bonuses.
When your opponent knocks (not gins), you can add your unmatched cards to their melds to reduce your deadwood before scoring.

Tips & Strategies

  • Watch what your opponent takes from the discard pile to guess their melds
  • Don't hold high cards (face cards) too long - they increase your deadwood risk
  • Middle cards (5-7) are more flexible for forming runs
  • Knock early with low deadwood rather than waiting for gin
  • Be careful discarding cards that could complete your opponent's melds
