Frequently Asked Questions

Go Fish is a classic card game typically played with 2-6 players using a standard 52-card deck. The goal is to collect the most 'books' (four cards of the same rank). Players take turns asking opponents for specific ranks. If the opponent has cards of that rank, they must hand them over. If not, they say 'Go Fish!' and the asking player draws from the deck.
With 2-3 players, each player receives 7 cards. With 4 or more players, each receives 5 cards. The remaining cards form the 'fish pond' or draw pile in the center. In this online version against one CPU opponent, both players start with 7 cards.
A book is a complete set of four cards of the same rank (e.g., four 7s, four Kings, or four Aces). When a player collects all four cards of a rank, they immediately place the book face-up in front of them. The player with the most books at the end wins!
You can only ask for a rank if you already have at least one card of that rank in your hand. For example, if you have a 7, you can ask 'Do you have any 7s?' but you cannot ask for a rank you don't hold. This is a fundamental rule of the game.
When the opponent doesn't have the requested rank, they say 'Go Fish!' and you must draw a card from the draw pile. If you happen to draw the rank you asked for, you get another turn! If not, it becomes the opponent's turn.
The game ends when all 13 books have been collected (since there are 13 different ranks in a deck). This can also happen when both players run out of cards and the draw pile is empty. The player with the most books wins!
If you run out of cards during the game (by making books), you draw 5 cards from the draw pile if cards remain. If the draw pile is also empty, you wait until all books are collected. If both players are out of cards and the draw pile is empty, the game ends.
Go Fish involves both luck and skill. Luck determines your initial hand and what you draw. Skill comes from remembering what opponents ask for (revealing what they hold), making smart requests, and tracking which cards have been played. Good memory gives a significant advantage!
Key strategies include: (1) Remember what ranks opponents ask for - they must have at least one of that rank. (2) Ask for ranks where you have multiple cards to increase chances of making books. (3) Pay attention to 'Go Fish' results to track what's in the deck. (4) When possible, ask for ranks the opponent recently received.
