About Hearts

Hearts is a classic trick-taking card game for four players. Unlike most card games where you want to score points, in Hearts the goal is to AVOID points. Each heart card is worth 1 point, and the dreaded Queen of Spades is worth 13 points. The player with the lowest score when someone reaches 100 points wins the game.

How to Play Hearts

Pass Cards

At the start of each round, select 3 cards to pass. Direction rotates: left, right, across, then no passing.

Follow Suit

When a card is led, you must play a card of the same suit if you have one. Otherwise, play any card.

Avoid Points

Don't take hearts (1 point each) or the Queen of Spades (13 points). Lowest score wins!

Win Tricks Wisely

The highest card of the led suit wins the trick. Win tricks that don't contain points!

Hearts Tips & Strategies

  • •Pass high cards like Aces and Kings to avoid taking tricks late in the round
  • •Try to void a suit early so you can dump hearts when that suit is led
  • •Watch out for the Queen of Spades - pass it if you can't protect it
  • •Lead low cards to let others fight over who takes the trick
  • •If you're taking points anyway, consider shooting the moon!

If you take ALL 13 hearts AND the Queen of Spades in a single round, you 'Shoot the Moon'. Instead of getting 26 points, you get 0 and all other players get 26 points. It's a risky but rewarding strategy!

Hearts cannot be led until they are 'broken'. Hearts are broken when a player plays a heart because they cannot follow the led suit. Once broken, hearts can be led.
