About Mancala

Mancala is one of humanity's oldest and most widely played games, with archaeological evidence suggesting it was played over 7,000 years ago in ancient Africa. The word "mancala" comes from the Arabic word "naqala," meaning "to move."

This version uses the most popular ruleset called "Kalah," which is commonly played in the United States. Each player has six small pits and one large store. The game begins with four stones in each small pit, and players take turns picking up all stones from one pit and distributing them counter-clockwise.

What makes Mancala fascinating is the depth of strategy hidden within its simple rules. Players must think several moves ahead, balancing between scoring points, setting up captures, and preventing their opponent from gaining an advantage. It's a game of counting, planning, and outmaneuvering your opponent.

Mancala Tips & Strategies

  1. 1.
Count for extra turns: Always look for moves that will land your last stone in your store for a free extra turn.
  2. 2.
Set up captures: Keep some of your pits empty to potentially capture stones from your opponent's side.
  3. 3.
Protect your stones: Don't leave many stones in pits that your opponent can easily capture.
  4. 4.
Control the tempo: Try to keep stones moving on your side while depleting your opponent's options.
  5. 5.
Think ahead: Plan multiple moves in advance, especially chain moves that give you several turns in a row.

Frequently Asked Questions About Mancala

Mancala is one of the world's oldest known games, with origins in Africa over 7,000 years ago. It's a two-player count-and-capture game where players take turns sowing seeds or stones around a board, trying to collect the most in their store.
Click on one of your pits (the 6 on your side) to pick up all the stones and drop them one by one counter-clockwise. If your last stone lands in your store, you get another turn. If it lands in an empty pit on your side, you capture that stone plus all stones in the opposite pit.
If your last stone lands in an empty pit on your side, you capture that stone AND all the stones in the pit directly opposite (on your opponent's side). All captured stones go into your store.
You get an extra turn whenever your last stone lands in your own store (the large pit on your right). This can chain multiple moves together if you plan carefully!
The game ends when all six pits on one player's side are empty. The other player then captures all remaining stones on their side. The player with the most stones in their store wins!
