About Sokoban
Sokoban is a classic puzzle game created by Hiroyuki Imabayashi in 1981. The name means "warehouse keeper" in Japanese, and the goal is simple: push all the boxes onto the designated storage locations.
What makes Sokoban challenging is its deceptively simple rules. You can only push boxes, not pull them, and you can only push one box at a time. This means every move matters, and one wrong push can make the puzzle unsolvable.
Our browser-based version features multiple levels of increasing difficulty. Start with basic puzzles to learn the mechanics, then tackle more complex warehouse layouts as your skills improve!
How to Play Sokoban
Move Your Character
Use arrow keys or WASD to move the warehouse keeper (😊) around the level.
Push Boxes
Walk into a box (📦) to push it. Remember: you can only push, not pull, and only one box at a time.
Complete the Puzzle
Place all boxes on the green target spots to complete the level. The fewer moves, the better!
Frequently Asked Questions
Tips & Strategies
- •Think before you push - once a box is in a corner, it's usually stuck forever
- •Work backwards in your mind - figure out where boxes need to end up first
- •Look for "dead squares" - positions where a box can never reach a goal
- •Sometimes you need to push boxes into temporary positions to access other areas
- •Don't be afraid to restart - it's better than getting completely stuck
